Posterior short-segment fixation has been favored over long-segment fixation for burst fractures of thoracolumbar spine in view of preservation of motion levels. However, short-segment spanning fixation (SSSF) is known to be associated with a higher rate of progressive kyphosis and implant failure. Combined anterior and posterior or “circumferential” fixation (CF) provides superior biomechanically stability, and has been shown to be clinically successful, but is known to have associated morbidities and a high rate of complications.
